William Fraser

(Highland District) Born at Craskie in Glencannich, Strathglass, 1779, the son of John Fraser and Jean Chisholm; arrived in Valladolid from Samalaman; ordained a priest (2nd January 1804 ?) and left for Scotland, 2nd September 1804; in Lochaber, 1804- 14; and a master at Lismore, 1814-22; went to Canada, to Cape Breton Is. and, in 1824, to Antigonish; consecrated titular Bishop of Tanis and vicar apostolic of Nova Scotia, by Angus Bernard MacEachern (no. 24), in Antigonish, 24th June 1827; jurisdiction extended to Cape Breton Is., 1829, and Bermuda, 1836; in 1842, his vicariate was made the See of Halifax, which was divided in 1844, Fraser choosing the Scottish part, viz., Cape Breton Is. and eastern Nova Scotia (the bishopric of Arichat), with his residence at Antigonish; died at Antigonish, 4th October 1851.
